Canggu has quickly become one of Bali’s most magnetic spots, especially for travellers looking for something more relaxed than Seminyak, but still full of energy. When we first arrived, we immediately felt the difference, it’s slower, but in a way that lets you actually enjoy every part of your day.
With its black sand beaches and effortlessly cool café scene, Canggu blends work, leisure and social life so naturally. It’s the kind of place where mornings start with a good coffee and somehow turn into sunset drinks, and before you know it, you’ve completely settled into its rhythm.

Why Visit Canggu?
Canggu stands out for its balance of relaxation and lifestyle. It’s less commercial than Seminyak but still offers excellent food, nightlife and accommodation options.
The area has become a hub for digital nomads, creatives and long-term travelers, which gives it a community-driven feel. At the same time, short-term visitors will find plenty to do without needing a packed itinerary. Canggu is ideal for those who enjoy slow travel, cafe hopping, beach time and a social atmosphere without the intensity of traditional tourist hotspots.
Best Areas in Canggu
- Batu Bolong for central location and cafes
- Echo Beach for surfing and quieter stays
- Berawa for beach clubs and modern vibe

Things to Do in Canggu
1. Beaches and Surfing
Canggu’s beaches are known for their dark volcanic sand and consistent waves, which is why they’ve become so popular with surfers. Batu Bolong Beach is the go to for beginners, while Echo Beach tends to have stronger waves and attracts more experienced surfers.
Even if you’re not surfing, the beaches are still such a big part of the Canggu experience. We found ourselves spending a lot of time just walking along the shore or sitting at a beach bar watching the waves roll in. The vibe is super relaxed and social, with music playing, people hanging out for hours, and everyone slowly gathering as the sun goes down. It’s simple, unplanned, and honestly one of the best parts of being there.
2. Beach Clubs and Sunset Lifestyle
Canggu is home to some of the most energetic and modern beach clubs in Bali, and it’s very easy to lose an entire day at one without even realising.
Finns Beach Club is one of the most well known, with its multiple pools, DJs and direct beach access, making it a full day hangout spot from afternoon through to sunset. Atlas Beach Fest takes things up a level in scale, with a more festival like atmosphere, live entertainment and a constant buzz of energy. For something a little more laid back, The Lawn Canggu is our favourite, it feels more relaxed and stylish, perfect for sunset drinks right by the ocean.
Together, these places really capture the Canggu lifestyle, social, easy going and built around long afternoons that slowly turn into sunset evenings.
3. Cafe Culture and Brunch Scene
One of the biggest highlights of Canggu is its café culture, it genuinely feels like every corner has a beautifully designed spot waiting to be discovered. From smoothie bowls and specialty coffee to full international menus, it’s the kind of place where brunch easily turns into a daily ritual.
Crate Café is one of the most popular, with a lively, buzzing atmosphere and really affordable brunch options that keep it consistently busy. The Shady Shack feels completely different, more relaxed and tucked away, with a peaceful, plant based menu that’s perfect for a slower morning. Milk & Madu is another go to, especially for all day dining, it’s spacious, family friendly and always reliable no matter what you’re in the mood for.
What we loved most is how many cafés are laptop friendly, which is why so many people end up staying longer than planned. It really makes Canggu one of the easiest places in Bali to mix travel with remote work without it ever feeling forced.
Best Restaurants in Canggu
Canggu’s food scene is incredibly diverse, ranging from simple local warungs to high end restaurants. We loved how easy it was to go from authentic Indonesian meals one day to modern international dining the next. There’s always something new to try, which keeps the experience exciting no matter how long you stay.
Craft Beer and Casual Dining
Canggu offers a wide range of food options, from casual eats to more premium dining.
- Black Sand Brewery – best for craft beer and relaxed dining
- Old Man’s – beachfront bar with casual food and nightlife
These spots are ideal for relaxed evenings or pre-nightlife drinks.
Indian Restaurants
Canggu has a growing number of Indian restaurants catering to travelers looking for familiar flavours. Spice Journey offers authentic Indian dishes with rich flavours, while Indian Delites is known for its comforting classics like butter chicken, biryani and freshly baked naan.
Asian and Fusion Flavours
For something more contemporary, Ji Restaurant Bali offers Japanese fusion with a strong focus on presentation and flavour. Mason Canggu is a well-known modern restaurant offering high-quality dishes in a stylish setting.
These venues reflect the international influence that defines Canggu’s dining scene.
Nightlife in Canggu
Canggu nightlife is social and relaxed, centred around beach bars rather than big clubs.
- Old Man’s – lively and popular for parties
- The Lawn Canggu – sunset drinks with music
It’s a great place to enjoy a fun night without the intensity of larger party areas.

Where to Stay in Canggu
Canggu has such a wide range of places to stay, and it really depends on the kind of trip you’re planning. You’ll find everything from private villas with your own pool to boutique hotels and even co-living spaces if you’re staying longer. Most places lean into that modern Bali aesthetic, open spaces, lots of natural light, and interiors that feel both stylish and comfortable, which honestly makes it so easy to settle in.
When we were choosing where to stay, location made the biggest difference. Areas like Batu Bolong and Berawa are definitely the most convenient, especially if you want to be close to cafés, the beach and the main social spots. We found that staying here meant we could walk or do short scooter rides to most places, which saved us a lot of time with Canggu traffic. If it’s your first time, we’d definitely recommend basing yourself around these areas so everything feels easily accessible without having to plan too much.
