Interlaken vs Grindelwald
Best Base for Swiss Alps
Interlaken and Grindelwald are both beautiful Swiss bases, but they offer completely different versions of Switzerland. Interlaken is practical, central and well-connected; Grindelwald is scenic, alpine and far more emotional.
For me, the best way to understand the difference is this: Interlaken is the gateway to the Swiss Alps, while Grindelwald is where you actually feel inside the Swiss Alps.
On our Switzerland trip, we stayed in both. After Zurich and Lucerne, we spent one night at The HEY HOTEL in Interlaken, then continued to Hotel Kreuz & Post in Grindelwald. That route made sense because Interlaken gave us convenience and connection, while Grindelwald gave us the snowy mountain atmosphere I had been dreaming of.
If I had to choose only one, I would choose Grindelwald for beauty, romance and the true alpine feeling. But if I were planning a first Switzerland itinerary with lots of day trips, luggage, trains and limited time, I would still understand why some travellers choose Interlaken. The right answer depends on your travel style.

Quick Answer: Interlaken or Grindelwald?
If you want the most scenic, romantic, mountain-village experience, stay in Grindelwald.
If you want the most practical base for transport, day trips, lakes and flexibility, stay in Interlaken.
If you have enough time, the best option is to do what we did: stay in Interlaken briefly, then move to Grindelwald. This gives you the convenience of Interlaken without missing the alpine magic of Grindelwald.

Why Stay in Interlaken?
Interlaken is a very practical base, especially if it is your first time in Switzerland and you want easy access to different parts of the Jungfrau Region. It sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, which gives it a beautiful setting, but its biggest advantage is not just the scenery. Its biggest advantage is connectivity.
From Interlaken, you can easily continue towards Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Jungfraujoch, Lake Brienz, Lake Thun and other surrounding areas. If you are still deciding what you want to do each day, Interlaken gives you flexibility. This is why I think Interlaken works well as a short stop. We used it exactly that way — as a bridge between Lucerne and Grindelwald. After the scenic train journey from Lucerne, staying in Interlaken made the route feel smooth and practical before moving deeper into the mountains.
Interlaken also has more of a town feel. There are more restaurants, shops, hotels, transport options and general tourist services. If you are travelling with luggage, arriving late, or trying to keep the itinerary simple, that can be very helpful.
But Interlaken is not where I felt the strongest Swiss Alps emotion. It was beautiful, but it still felt like a gateway. The real alpine feeling came when we reached Grindelwald.
Why Stay in Grindelwald?
Grindelwald is the place I would choose if your dream of Switzerland involves snow, mountains, wooden chalets, dramatic views and waking up surrounded by the Alps.
This is where Switzerland felt most cinematic to me. In Grindelwald, the mountains do not feel like something you travel to see for the day. They feel like they are around you from the moment you step outside. The village sits beneath the Eiger, and in winter, especially, it has that snowy, emotional, almost fairytale quality that makes the whole trip feel special.
We stayed at Hotel Kreuz & Post Grindelwald, and the location worked beautifully because it was central and practical while still giving us the alpine village feeling. For a winter trip with luggage, convenience really matters. You do not want to arrive in a mountain village and then struggle to reach your hotel. Grindelwald is also a better base if you want to visit places like Grindelwald-First, First Cliff Walk, the Eiger Express, Kleine Scheidegg or Jungfraujoch. It feels more immersive than staying in Interlaken and travelling in for the day.
The only downside is that Grindelwald can be more weather-dependent, more expensive in peak periods, and slightly less varied for food than Interlaken. But for me, the scenery more than makes up for that.
Which Is More Beautiful: Interlaken or Grindelwald?
Grindelwald is more beautiful in the classic Swiss Alps sense.
Interlaken is scenic because of its lakes, open spaces and mountain backdrop. It is lovely, especially when the weather is clear and you can see the surrounding peaks. But Grindelwald feels much more dramatic. The mountains are closer, the village feels more alpine, and the whole setting is more emotional.
If you are travelling all the way to Switzerland because you want that postcard mountain feeling, Grindelwald is the stronger choice.
Interlaken is beautiful as a base. Grindelwald is beautiful as a destination.
Which Is Better for First-Time Visitors?
For first-time visitors, I would choose based on how you like to travel. If you are nervous about logistics, want more restaurant options, want a central base, or are planning several day trips in different directions, Interlaken may feel easier.
If you want your first Switzerland trip to feel romantic, scenic and unforgettable, Grindelwald is better.
Personally, I think the ideal first-time route is:
Zurich → Lucerne → Interlaken → Grindelwald
That is what made our route feel balanced. Zurich gave us the polished city start. Lucerne gave us the lake and old-town romance. Interlaken gave us the practical gateway. Grindelwald gave us the alpine magic.
Which Is Better for Couples?
Grindelwald is better for couples, especially if you want a romantic mountain stay.
Interlaken can still work for couples, but it feels more practical and active. Grindelwald feels more intimate and atmospheric. It is the kind of place where a simple walk through the village, a warm drink, a mountain-view hotel room or a snowy evening can feel special without needing to do much.
For a honeymoon, anniversary or romantic Switzerland trip, I would choose Grindelwald over Interlaken.
Which Is Better in Winter?
For winter, I would choose Grindelwald. This is personal too, because I love snow and cold weather. Grindelwald in winter feels like the Switzerland I had imagined: crisp air, snowy scenery, mountain views and cosy alpine energy.
Interlaken in winter is still useful, but it does not always feel as snowy or immersive as Grindelwald. It works well as a stop or base, but if winter atmosphere matters, Grindelwald is much stronger.
If you are not skiing, Grindelwald still works beautifully because you can enjoy winter walks, mountain viewpoints, gondolas, sledging, cafés and scenic train journeys.
Which Is Better for Day Trips?
Interlaken is better for day trips because it is more central. From Interlaken, you can easily reach Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Lake Brienz, Lake Thun, Harder Kulm and Jungfraujoch. It gives you more flexibility if you want to explore different places without changing hotels.
Grindelwald is better if your day trips are more mountain-focused. It is especially useful for Grindelwald-First, First Cliff Walk, the Eiger Express, Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch.
So the answer depends on your itinerary. For broad regional exploring, choose Interlaken. For alpine experiences, choose Grindelwald.
Which Is Better for Food?
Interlaken has more variety and is easier for food overall. Because Interlaken is larger and more tourist-focused, it has more restaurants, international options, Indian restaurants, cafés and casual dining choices. As a vegetarian and gluten-free traveller, I would say Interlaken gives you slightly more flexibility.
Grindelwald has restaurants and hotel dining, but the options are more limited, especially if you are vegetarian and gluten-free. It is still manageable, but I would plan more carefully.
For me, food planning in both places matters because I have a gluten allergy, I am vegetarian and I do not drink alcohol. I would not arrive in either place without checking restaurant options first, but I would be especially careful in Grindelwald because mountain towns can have fewer choices.
Gluten-Free and Vegetarian Travel: Interlaken vs Grindelwald
For gluten-free and vegetarian travel, Interlaken is easier, but Grindelwald is still possible with planning.
In Interlaken, I would look for Indian restaurants, Italian restaurants that can explain gluten-free preparation clearly, hotel breakfasts, supermarkets and restaurants used to international travellers. It is a practical place to find something safe, especially if you ask questions and avoid risky items like shared fryers, bread, pasta, sauces and pastries.
In Grindelwald, I would rely more on hotel breakfast, pre-planned restaurants, supermarket snacks and careful communication. If I were staying longer, I would contact restaurants ahead rather than leaving it until dinner time.
For both places, I would carry safe gluten-free snacks from Coop or Migros. This is especially useful before mountain excursions, train journeys or days where the weather changes your plans.
Which Is Better for Hotels?
Grindelwald has the better hotel atmosphere. Interlaken has more practical hotel choice.
In Interlaken, hotels are useful because they place you close to transport, restaurants and day trips. Our stay at The HEY HOTEL worked well because Interlaken was a one-night practical stop.
In Grindelwald, the hotel can become part of the experience. A mountain-view room, central location, cosy interiors or spa facilities can make the stay feel far more special. Our stay at Hotel Kreuz & Post Grindelwald worked well because it gave us a central alpine base after Interlaken.
For a luxury or romantic Switzerland trip, I would spend more carefully in Grindelwald than Interlaken. If there is one place where the view matters, it is Grindelwald.
Which Is Easier by Train?
Interlaken is easier as a transport hub, but Grindelwald is still very easy by train. This is where Switzerland is brilliant. You do not need a car for this route. My husband planned our broader train logistics in advance and booked our individual train tickets through Omio. We did not use a Swiss Travel Pass. Instead, we booked each train journey separately across our Switzerland route.
Because he planned early, we were able to book first-class tickets without the price feeling dramatically higher. That made a real difference. First class felt calmer, less crowded and more comfortable than second class, with better space and amenities. With luggage in winter, that comfort made the travel days feel much smoother.
For this specific Interlaken and Grindelwald decision, train planning matters because you may not need to choose only one. If your itinerary allows, you can stay briefly in Interlaken and then continue to Grindelwald, which is what I would recommend.
Should You Stay in Both Interlaken and Grindelwald?
Yes, if you have enough time, staying in both can work beautifully. I would not necessarily split too many nights if your trip is short, because changing hotels too often can become tiring. But if you are already moving through Switzerland like we were, then a one-night Interlaken stop followed by Grindelwald can make sense.
A good structure would be: 1 night in Interlaken + 2 nights in Grindelwald
This gives you the practical benefit of Interlaken, then enough time to properly enjoy the alpine beauty of Grindelwald.
If you only have two nights total, I would choose Grindelwald unless your itinerary depends heavily on day trips in multiple directions.
My Honest Recommendation
If you are choosing between Interlaken and Grindelwald, my honest recommendation is:
Stay in Grindelwald if you want the most beautiful and memorable experience.
Stay in Interlaken if you want the easiest base for transport and day trips.
Stay in both if your route allows it.
Looking back, I am glad we saw both, but Grindelwald stayed with me more. Interlaken was useful and scenic, but Grindelwald felt like the emotional highlight. It was the place where Switzerland became snowy, cinematic and unforgettable.
For a first Switzerland trip, I would not skip Interlaken entirely if it fits naturally into your route, but I also would not choose it over Grindelwald if my heart was set on the Alps. For me, Grindelwald wins. Interlaken helped the trip flow, but Grindelwald made the trip feel magical.
Best Itinerary Option
For a balanced first-time Switzerland itinerary, I would suggest:
Zurich: 2 nights – A polished city start, chocolate, Old Town, lake and arrival comfort.
Lucerne: 1 night – A romantic lake city with Chapel Bridge, Old Town and beautiful mountain access.
Interlaken: 1 night – A practical gateway stop between Lucerne and the Jungfrau Region.
Grindelwald: 2 nights – The alpine highlight, with mountain views, snow, Grindelwald-First, Eiger Express or Jungfraujoch.
If you have less time, reduce Zurich or Interlaken, but try not to reduce Grindelwald too much. It deserves space.
