Ubud feels like the soul of Bali, a place where everything slows down and you can actually hear yourself think. It is surrounded by lush jungles, rice terraces and flowing rivers – it’s completely different from Seminyak or Canggu. Here, it’s less about beach clubs and more about reconnecting with yourself.
It’s a destination where your days naturally slow down with mornings that begin with yoga or quiet walks. Afternoons turn into slow cafe hopping or indulgent spa time and evenings were calm, grounding and honestly exactly what I didn’t realise I needed. If you’re looking to reset, recharge and experience a deeper side of Bali, Ubud is the perfect place. Make sure you also check our Complete Bali guide for your trip.
Why Visit Ubud?
Ubud has become one of the world’s most loved wellness and romantic getaways but what makes it truly special is how effortlessly it blends both.
For couples, it feels incredibly romantic – think quiet jungle views, candlelit dinners and shared spa days that make you slow down together. For those on a personal reset, Ubud offers so much space for wellness too – from yoga in the rice fields to healing rituals and peaceful retreats tucked away in nature.
The combination of natural surroundings, traditional practices and modern wellness resorts creates an environment that supports both relaxation and exploration. Whether you’re here to reconnect with your partner or with yourself, Ubud has a way of meeting you exactly where you are.
What is Ubud Really Like?
Ubud felt noticeably different from the rest of Bali that I had explored. After the busier coastal areas, it was a lovely change in pace with quieter roads, less crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Instead of beaches and ocean views, you are surrounded by rice fields, jungle and river valleys in every direction. It’s truly a nature lover’s dream destination as it is the kind of place that quietly encourages you to enjoy the view and slow down without really trying.
If your Bali trip includes a few different areas (which I highly recommend), then I will suggest keeping at least a few days for Ubud. It will add a completely different layer to your experience and balance out the faster pace of the coast.

Top things to Do in Ubud
1. Spa and Wellness Experiences
Wellness is such a big part of Ubud, and it’s something you naturally fall into while you’re there. Whether it’s a simple Balinese massage or a more indulgent spa day, there’s something for every kind of mood and budget and it all feels a lot more intentional than what you might be used to.
What I personally loved is how each experience feels different, depending on what you’re looking for:
Karsa Spa
This one is all about the setting. It’s peaceful, surrounded by greenery and rice fields, and feels really calm without being overly luxurious.
Fivelements Retreat Bali
Perfect if you want something deeper. It’s more of a full wellness experience with holistic healing, not just a quick spa visit.
Taksu Yoga & Wellness Center
A great mix of yoga, treatments and healing in one place. It feels very grounding and easy to fit into your day.
Across all of these, what stands out is the focus on natural ingredients and traditional techniques. It’s not just about relaxing for an hour — you actually leave feeling reset, which is exactly what Ubud does best.
2. Yoga and Meditation
Yoga and meditation are a big part of the Ubud experience, and it’s one of those places where it just feels easy to get into. The environment is so calm that it really encourages the practice.
I’ll be honest, I’m not usually a yoga person, but I actually really enjoyed it here as it didn’t feel intimidating or overly serious, just something nice to ease into while you’re in that kind of setting.
Here are two places that really stood out to us:
The Yoga Barn
Probably the most well-known spot in Ubud, with a wide range of classes and retreats. It’s a great place to try different styles all in one space.
Radiantly Alive
More modern and structured, with a really welcoming feel. It’s ideal if you prefer something a bit more organised but still relaxed.
Whether you’re a complete beginner (like me) or already into yoga, it’s a really easy place to try it out without any pressure.
3. Nature and Scenic Walks
Ubud’s natural beauty is easily one of the biggest reasons people fall in love with the place and once you arrive, you will understand why. Everything feels incredibly green, calm, and a little untouched, especially if you explore at the right time.
These were some of our favourite spots:
Tegallalang Rice Terraces
One of the most iconic views in Bali. It can get busy, but if you go early, it feels a lot more peaceful and worth it.
Campuhan Ridge Walk
A really easy and scenic walk, perfect for a slow morning. It’s quiet, open, and a nice break from busier areas.
Tibumana Waterfall
A more tucked-away waterfall that feels calm and less crowded compared to others.
I’d definitely recommend starting your day early for these — it makes such a difference to the overall experience.
4. Cultural Experiences
Ubud feels deeply connected to Balinese culture and traditions, and you notice it in the everyday details, from temples and offerings to local ceremonies happening around you.
These are a couple of places that are worth visiting:
Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary
A really unique mix of nature and temples, with monkeys roaming freely throughout the forest. It’s definitely worth visiting, but just be a little cautious, don’t carry loose items like sunglasses or food, as they can grab things quickly.
Ubud Palace
Right in the centre of Ubud, this is a great spot to see traditional Balinese architecture. In the evenings, they often host cultural dance performances which are worth checking out.
You’ll also come across local markets, temple ceremonies and traditional dance shows happening throughout the area, which makes the whole experience feel a lot more immersive and authentic.

Where to Stay in Ubud
Ubud is known for its beautiful jungle stays, the kind of places that feel like an experience in themselves, not just somewhere to sleep. A lot of the accomodations are designed around nature and wellness, so you end up slowing down without even trying.
Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan
A luxury stay surrounded by lush greenery and river views. It feels very private and peaceful, perfect if you want something special.
COMO Shambhala Estate
More than just a hotel — this is a full wellness retreat with a strong focus on health, healing and relaxation.
Maya Ubud Resort & Spa
A great balance between comfort and nature, with beautiful views and a really calming atmosphere.
Ubud offers a deeply enriching travel experience that goes beyond typical sightseeing. It’s a place to slow down, reconnect with nature and focus on wellness while still enjoying culture and great food. For many travelers, Ubud becomes one of the most memorable parts of their Bali trip. For a deeper breakdown, refer to our Where to Stay in Bali guide.
