For me, Turkey is one of those places where a little planning changes everything. I do not need to over-plan it, but I do need to get the right things right. If I sort the visa side early, make the airport arrival easy, and leave breathing room around domestic flights and early mornings, the whole trip feels polished instead of tiring. I always pack for Turkey with contrast in mind, because it is never just one type of trip. Istanbul is a city where I walk a lot, dress a little better for dinner, and want to look polished without making myself uncomfortable. Cappadocia is completely different. It is all about layers, early mornings, terraces and scenic days that start colder than they look in photos.
In Istanbul, I would always prioritise comfortable shoes first. That sounds simple, but it matters so much there. If I am exploring the old city, walking through bazaars, moving between mosques, cafés and waterfront areas, I know I am going to cover a lot of ground. I still want to feel put together, but daytime Istanbul is not the place where I would sacrifice comfort just to look perfect. Then for evenings, I would absolutely bring a few nicer outfits because Istanbul does have that dressed-up side to it. Rooftop dinners, Bosphorus nights and beautiful hotels deserve better than “just practical.”
For Cappadocia, I would always pack layers no matter what the daytime forecast says. Sunrise is part of the entire point of being there, and the early morning can feel much colder than people expect. That means I always want a jacket, a knit, or something I can throw over my outfit without thinking twice. I never want to be standing on a terrace with balloons in the sky wishing I had packed better.
For mosque visits, I always make sure I am dressed appropriately before I leave the hotel. At the Blue Mosque, visitors need to dress modestly, shoulders and knees should be covered, women need a head covering, and shoes come off before entering. Scarves are available if needed, but I still prefer carrying my own because it feels easier and more respectful. I also like having socks with me, because once I know I need to remove my shoes, that small detail suddenly matters much more.
I would also pack lighter than I think I need. Turkey feels much easier when I am moving between airports, transfers and hotels without dragging too much behind me. For me, lighter luggage almost always feels more elegant than overpacking.
