Best Places to Stay in Santorini

Oia, Imerovigli & Fira

Santorini is one of those places where the hotel is not just accommodation; it becomes part of the destination itself. The island is famous for its caldera views, whitewashed cliffside villages, blue domes, sunsets and cave-style suites, but where you stay will completely change how the island feels.

For a first trip, the biggest decision is usually between Oia, Imerovigli and Fira. Oia gives you the postcard version of Santorini, Imerovigli gives you calmer cliffside luxury, and Fira gives you convenience, restaurants and transport. Santorini’s caldera villages are all beautiful, but they offer very different rhythms, especially if you are choosing between romance, views, nightlife or ease of movement. This guide compares the best areas to stay in Santorini, including the kind of traveller each area suits, what to be mindful of, and how to choose a hotel that gives you the Santorini experience you actually want.

Oia — Best for Iconic Views, Blue Domes and First-Time Romance

Oia is the Santorini most people dream of before they arrive. It is the village of blue domes, whitewashed laneways, cliffside suites, caldera views and famous sunset crowds. If this is your first visit and you want the postcard version of Santorini, Oia delivers that feeling immediately.

The best thing about staying in Oia is that you get to experience the village outside the busiest day-trip hours. Early mornings are softer, evenings feel more atmospheric, and having your own balcony or plunge pool can make the crowds feel far less overwhelming. This is where we stayed at Sophia Oia View for two nights, in a Superior Cave Suite with a semi-covered plunge pool and caldera view. What made that stay special was not just the location, but the privacy. Oia can be extremely crowded at sunrise and sunset, yet we had caldera and blue dome views from our own balcony and plunge pool.

That is the biggest thing I would tell anyone booking Oia: do not just look for a pretty room. Look carefully at privacy, exposure, terrace layout and whether people can see directly into your pool or outdoor area. Outdoor tubs and pools can look beautiful in photos, but in Santorini they can be very exposed because of the cliffside layout.

Stay in Oia if you want: iconic Santorini views, blue domes, romance, sunsets, luxury cave suites and the classic first-time experience.
Be mindful of: crowds, stairs, high prices, limited privacy in some outdoor pools and very busy sunset hours.
How long to stay: 1 to 2 nights is enough for many travellers, especially if pairing it with Imerovigli.

Imerovigli — Best for Quiet Luxury, Caldera Views and Couples

Imerovigli is the area I would recommend if you want Santorini to feel calmer, more spacious and more refined. It sits on the caldera rim after Fira and Firostefani and is often described as the “balcony of Santorini” or the “balcony of the Aegean” because of its elevated position and panoramic views.

This is where we stayed at Tholos Resort after Oia, and the contrast was exactly what made Santorini feel complete. Oia gave us the dream. Imerovigli gave us the calm. At Tholos Resort, we stayed in two room types: Deluxe Suite with Hammam and Outdoor Jacuzzi, then Tholos Villa with indoor and outdoor pool. The balcony breakfast, caldera views, walking paths, churches and whitewashed surroundings made Imerovigli feel like the part of Santorini you can actually settle into.

Imerovigli is especially beautiful for couples because it gives you the same cliffside beauty without the constant movement of Oia. It is also only around 3 km from Fira, and the caldera walking path connecting Fira and Oia passes through the village.

Stay in Imerovigli if you want: quiet luxury, caldera views, romantic hotels, walking paths, balcony breakfasts and fewer crowds.
Be mindful of: fewer shops and nightlife than Fira or Oia, plenty of stairs in cliffside hotels and the need for transport if you want to move around often.
How long to stay: 2 to 3 nights works beautifully, especially if you want the hotel to be part of the experience.

Fira — Best for Restaurants, Transport and Nightlife

Fira is Santorini’s main town and the most practical base if you want restaurants, bars, shopping, transport and easy movement around the island. It has caldera views in parts, but the atmosphere is busier and more functional than Imerovigli or Oia.

This is the area to choose if you want convenience over romance. Fira has the central bus station, more dining options, nightlife and easier connections to different parts of the island. Santorini area guides consistently describe Fira as the best choice for central access, restaurants and bars. I would choose Fira for a shorter or more practical stay, especially if you are planning tours, beach visits or want to avoid relying too much on taxis. It may not feel as dreamy as Oia or as serene as Imerovigli, but it is very useful.

Stay in Fira if you want: restaurants, nightlife, transport, shopping, easy tours and a central island base.
Be mindful of: it can feel busier and less romantic than Oia or Imerovigli.
How long to stay: 1 to 3 nights, depending on whether you are using it as a base.

Firostefani — Best for a Softer Alternative Near Fira

Firostefani sits between Fira and Imerovigli, making it a lovely middle-ground option if you want caldera views without staying in the busiest part of Fira. It is quieter than Fira but still close enough to walk in for restaurants, shops and transport. This area is a smart choice for travellers who want views and convenience but do not necessarily need the fame of Oia or the full stillness of Imerovigli. It can also offer better value compared with the most famous caldera areas, depending on the hotel.

Stay in Firostefani if you want: caldera views, quieter surroundings, walkable access to Fira and a balanced location.
Be mindful of: it has less of the “wow” factor of Oia and less of the resort-like calm of Imerovigli.
How long to stay: 2 to 3 nights.

Kamari and Perissa — Best for Beach Access and Better Value

Kamari and Perissa sit on the beach side of Santorini, which gives a completely different experience from the caldera villages. These areas are better for travellers who want direct beach access, a more relaxed seaside stay and usually better value than Oia or Imerovigli.

The trade-off is that you do not get the same caldera views. If this is your dream Santorini trip, I would personally prioritise the caldera for at least part of the stay. But if you are staying longer, travelling in summer, or want a beach-focused base, Kamari and Perissa can make sense. These areas are also more practical for families or travellers who prefer flatter access and fewer cliffside stairs.

Stay in Kamari or Perissa if you want: beach access, better value, relaxed seaside hotels and fewer stairs.
Be mindful of: no classic caldera views, less romance and a very different atmosphere from Oia or Imerovigli.
How long to stay: 2 to 4 nights if you want a beach-style Santorini stay.

Oia vs Imerovigli: My Ideal Santorini Stay Strategy

This is the biggest lesson I took from our Santorini stay: stay in Oia for the dream, stay in Imerovigli for the calm.

Oia gives you the postcard version of Santorini. It has the blue domes, narrow lanes, caldera views, sunset crowds and that famous cliffside beauty everyone imagines before visiting. It is iconic, and I do think it is worth experiencing, especially for a first trip.

Imerovigli gives you the more peaceful version of Santorini. It still has incredible caldera views, whitewashed architecture and beautiful walking paths, but it feels calmer and easier to enjoy for longer.

For us, this split worked beautifully. Sophia Oia View gave us the iconic Oia experience with blue dome views, privacy and a plunge pool. Tholos Resort gave us the slower Santorini experience with balcony breakfasts, walking tracks, caldera views and a more relaxed cliffside stay.

If time and budget allow, I would absolutely recommend splitting your Santorini stay between Oia and Imerovigli. It gives you both sides of the island without forcing one place to do everything.

My Ideal Santorini Stay Strategy

For a first Santorini trip, I would not choose only one area if the budget allows. I would split the stay between Oia and Imerovigli because they give you two very different versions of the island.

Stay in Oia for the dream. Stay in Imerovigli for the calm.

Oia is where you feel the iconic Santorini image most strongly: the blue domes, the cliffside suites, the crowded sunsets and the feeling of being inside the postcard. Imerovigli is where Santorini becomes easier to enjoy slowly, with quieter paths, wider caldera views and a more relaxed hotel experience. Our split worked beautifully. Sophia Oia View gave us the Oia experience, with a semi-covered plunge pool, caldera views and blue dome views. Tholos Resort gave us the slower Imerovigli experience, with balcony breakfasts, walking tracks, caldera views and a more peaceful cliffside stay.

If you only have two nights, choose the area that matches your main dream. If you have four or five nights, splitting the stay can make Santorini feel much more complete.

What to Look for Before Booking a Santorini Hotel

The biggest mistake travellers make in Santorini is booking only based on photos. Santorini hotels photograph beautifully, but the real experience depends on privacy, stairs, access, room category and view. Before booking, I would check whether the room has a true caldera view, whether the plunge pool or jacuzzi is private, whether people can walk past or look down into the terrace, how many stairs are involved, and whether breakfast is included. Some smaller suite-style properties do not have restaurants, while others serve breakfast directly to your balcony.

If you are vegetarian or gluten-free like me, I would always contact the property before arrival. Santorini has beautiful hotels, but breakfast can vary a lot between properties, and smaller cave-suite stays may not offer the same dining support as full-service resorts.

Quick Area Guide

Best area for first-time visitors: Oia
Best area for quiet luxury: Imerovigli
Best area for nightlife and restaurants: Fira
Best balanced location: Firostefani
Best area for beaches and value: Kamari or Perissa
Best romantic hotel strategy: Split Oia and Imerovigli
Best for fewer stairs: Beach towns are usually easier than cliffside caldera hotels

Final Thoughts

Where you stay in Santorini matters more than in many other destinations. The island is small, but the experience changes completely depending on whether you choose Oia, Imerovigli, Fira or the beach towns. For me, the strongest Santorini experience is not about choosing the most famous area only. It is about combining the iconic with the peaceful. Oia gives you the dream, but Imerovigli gives you the space to enjoy it.

That balance is what made Santorini feel not just beautiful, but unforgettable.
