When we planned our Istanbul stay, I spent a lot of time comparing Old City hotels, Bosphorus luxury properties and more modern stays around Karaköy and Taksim. We eventually stayed at Radisson Hotel Istanbul Sultanahmet because the Old City location made sense for our first Istanbul trip, but there were several other hotels I looked at closely and would still consider depending on the style of trip.

For me, Istanbul is not a city where I would choose a hotel casually. The location can completely change the rhythm of your days, especially if you want to visit Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar and still have enough energy left for dinner, tea, coffee and slow evening walks.

I have included indicative price ranges to help compare the hotels more easily, but these should only be treated as a guide. Istanbul hotel prices can change significantly depending on season, room category, availability, special events and how early you book, so I would always compare live rates before making a final decision.

1. Radisson Hotel Istanbul Sultanahmet

This is where we stayed in Istanbul, and I would describe it as a very practical, comfortable and well-located choice for a first trip. The biggest reason this hotel worked for us was the Old City location. When you are planning long sightseeing days around Sultanahmet, being close to the main historic sights makes the entire trip feel easier.

It is not the most ultra-luxury hotel in Istanbul, and I would not position it in the same category as Four Seasons or The Peninsula, but it gave us exactly what we needed for that part of the trip. It felt reliable, well placed and convenient, especially when we wanted to return to the hotel between sightseeing and dinner.

For someone visiting Istanbul for the first time, I think this is a smart hotel to consider if you want a recognised brand, Old City access and a base that keeps logistics simple.

Best for: first-time visitors, Old City sightseeing, couples who want convenience.

2. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet: The Dream Old City Upgrade

If I were upgrading our Old City stay, this would be the dream version. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet is the kind of hotel that lets you stay close to the historic heart of Istanbul while still feeling wrapped in proper luxury.

This is the hotel I would choose for a special occasion or a more indulgent first visit. You get the beauty and convenience of Sultanahmet, but with a much more refined level of service, dining and atmosphere. It suits travellers who want to walk into history during the day and return to something calm, polished and elegant at night.

Best for: luxury travellers, special occasions, first-time visitors with a higher budget.

3. The Peninsula Istanbul: Best for Stylish Waterfront Luxury

The Peninsula Istanbul is the hotel I would seriously consider if I were returning to Istanbul and wanted the trip to feel more stylish, modern and waterfront-led. Its Karaköy location gives a completely different energy from Sultanahmet, with easier access to cafés, restaurants, Galata and the Bosphorus.

This is less about being right beside the historic monuments and more about experiencing Istanbul as a glamorous city break. I would choose this if the hotel itself was part of the experience and if I wanted my days to feel slower, more polished and less sightseeing-heavy.

Best for: couples, return visitors, luxury city stays, waterfront views.

4. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus

Four Seasons at the Bosphorus is the hotel I would choose if I wanted Istanbul to feel grand, romantic and unhurried. This is not the most practical choice for a short sightseeing-heavy itinerary, but it is perfect if you want the Bosphorus to become part of the trip itself.

I would imagine this hotel for a longer Istanbul stay, an anniversary-style trip or a luxury escape where breakfast, spa time, waterfront views and slow evenings matter as much as ticking off landmarks.

Best for: romance, anniversaries, luxury escapes, Bosphorus views.

5. Mula Hotel

Mula Hotel is one I would include for travellers who want a more boutique-feeling Old City stay. It gives you the advantage of being close to Sultanahmet without necessarily choosing one of the large international luxury names. This would suit someone who wants a polished, design-conscious hotel but still wants to stay close to Istanbul’s historic core. I would consider it if I wanted Old City convenience with a more intimate atmosphere.

Best for: boutique luxury, Old City access, couples.

6. Cronton Design Hotel

Cronton Design Hotel is a strong option if you like hotels with a more stylish, design-led personality. Its Sirkeci location is practical because it keeps you close to the Old City while also giving you better access to other parts of Istanbul. I would consider this hotel for travellers who want something more elegant than a standard city hotel but still want convenience. It feels like a good bridge between sightseeing practicality and boutique-style luxury.

Best for: design lovers, couples, Sirkeci location, Old City access.

7. Grand Hyatt Istanbul

Grand Hyatt Istanbul is better suited to travellers who prefer a larger international hotel with strong facilities rather than a smaller historic stay. Its Taksim-area location gives a different rhythm from Sultanahmet, so I would recommend it more for travellers who want modern Istanbul, restaurants, shopping and city movement.

This would not be my first pick for a short first-time sightseeing trip, but it makes sense if you like established hotel brands and want a full-service 5-star base.

Best for: international-brand comfort, Taksim access, larger hotel facilities.

8. Raffles Istanbul

Raffles Istanbul is one I would consider for travellers who want a very polished, modern luxury stay and do not need to be in the Old City. It is more of a high-end lifestyle hotel than a historic Istanbul stay, so it suits a different kind of trip. I would choose this for a return visit, especially if the focus was shopping, dining, spa time and comfort rather than walking out directly into Sultanahmet.

Best for: modern luxury, shopping, spa, return visitors.

9. Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul

Çırağan Palace Kempinski is one of Istanbul’s most iconic luxury hotels, and it belongs on this list because it offers that palace-style Bosphorus experience that feels very special. This is not the hotel I would choose for convenience, but I would choose it for the feeling. It is the kind of hotel that works beautifully if Istanbul is the romantic centre of the trip and you want the stay itself to feel memorable.

Best for: palace luxury, Bosphorus views, special occasions.

10. Mövenpick Istanbul Hotel Golden Horn

Mövenpick Istanbul Hotel Golden Horn is a more value-conscious option compared with Istanbul’s ultra-luxury hotels. I would include it for travellers who want a recognised brand, comfort and a quieter stay, but who do not need to be right in Sultanahmet. It may not be as convenient for first-time sightseeing, but it can work well if pricing is important and you still want a reliable hotel experience.

Best for: recognised brand comfort, better-value luxury, quieter stays.
